Hangul Day Part 1 : King Sejong The Great, The Profile

The spoken language of our country is different from that of China and does not suit the Chinese characters. Therefore amongst uneducated people there have been many who, having something that they wish to put into words, have been unable to express their feelings in writing. I am greatly distressed because of this, and so I have made twenty eight new letters. Let everyone practice them at their ease, and adapt them to their daily use.

- King Sejong's Preface to Hunmin Chongum

Sejong The Great 세종대왕
 (May 15th 1397 ~ February 17th 1450)
Reign : August 1418 ~ February 1450
Father : King Taejong.
Mother : Queen Wongyeong.
The 4th King of Joseon Dynasty

King Sejong The Great was the 3rd son of King Taejong and Queen Wongyeong. He became of  king over his 2 brothers. During his reigned, King Sejong created many things in science, technology, military and literature in the15th century. He strenghtened Korean military by created and developed them. He created a farmer's handbook named 농사직설 or Nongsa jikseol for his people, it contains about Korean agricultural subjects, reformed the Korean calendar system and the most important thing that he created was Hangul, TheKorean alphabet. Before the creation of Hangul, only members of the highest class were literate. King Sejong created Hangul to make his people from all classes would read and write. He announced it to his people in a document named 훈민정음 or Huminjeongeum.

King Sejong is one of only two Korean rulers posthumously honored with the appellation "The Great".

Hangul Day Part 2 : Hunminjeongeum 훈민정음

Hunminjeongeum is the original name of Hangul. Huminjeongeum is a document created by King Sejong The Great, the 4th king in Joseon dynasty in the 15th century. He saw that only middle to upper class of his people were literated by Hanja but the lower class were illiterated. The previous literature named Hanja, was difficult to learn by common people. Because of his care and loving to his people, King Sejong the Great created more simple and easier alphabet system to make all of his people would read and write.
Now Hangul Day is celebrating every October of 9th in Korea.

The Classical Chinese (Hanzi/Hanja) of the Hunminjeongeum has been partly translated into Middle Korean. This translation is found together with Worinseokbo, and is called the Hunminjeongeum Eonhaebon.
"Because the speech of this country is different from that of China, it [the spoken language] does not match the [Chinese] letters. Therefore, even if the ignorant want to communicate, many of them in the end cannot state their concerns. Saddened by this, I have [had] 28 letters newly made. It is my wish that every man may easily learn these letters and that [they] be convenient for daily use"
Classical Chinese (original) :
國之語音
異乎中國
與文字不相流通
故愚民 有所欲言
而終不得伸其情者多矣
予爲此憫然
新制二十八字
欲使人人易習便於日用"耳"(矣)

Mix of Hanja (Classical Chinese) and Hangul (Eonhaebon) :

Dream
Throw out the mouth, toss the words
I answer with a dancing hand
I answer with a dancing heart
The universe is a dreaming musical instrument that has lost its owner
If you cry, a single star rises
The lives on earth dance a masked dance
The wavering leaves on the ends of branches
The rippling waves at the seaside

Love

No flower blooms without shaking
Every single beautiful flower in the world
Bursts forth after quaking
Shaking flowers set their stems upright
Likewise, no lover goes without shaking
No flower blooms without getting wet
Every flower that shines
Bursts forth after being soaked
Petals bloom warmed by the wind and rain
Likewise, no life goes without getting wet
