Korean Food Never Ending Stories

Everybody know about Hansik. It always appears in Korean Drama (Thank's to Korean Drama which has spreading Korean food to all over the world). Nowadays, who don't know about bibimbap ? kimbab ? bulgogi, even the most popular Korean food, Kimchi.

It will never end if we are talking about Korean food because the topics are very wide, but sometimes I'm also thinking Koreans mostly has a slim body shape. Do you know abut the secret ? The secret is because of Korean food has heatlhy ingredients made from the natural resources, based on my experiences and observations, the way of eating is also affected why Koreans mostly have a slim body shape.

While we are eating Korean food, they are three major part of Korean food.

The first part is Banchan. Banchan refers to various side dishes that always served in the first time. They are :
Kimchi : a fermented vegatables seasoned  with red pepper powder, salted fish, spring onions, garlic, ginger and salt.
Kimchi also has various type, they are : nabak kimchi, dongchimi, geotjoen, kkakdugi (this is my most favorite kimchi), Oi sobagi, Chonggak kimchi, yeolmu kimchi, pa kimchi and gat kimchi.

I just want to explain the details of my favorite kimchi, because I'm very sure there are a lot of articles about Kimchi in another blogs and books.

깍두기 Kkakdugi
Kkakdugi is made of oriental turnip cut into cubes and mixed with all sorts of condiments such as salt, red pepper powder, spring onions, garlic, ginger, oysters, and salted shrimp then put in an earthen ware jar to be fermented. It is one of my favorite kimchi.

나물 Namul : is vegetables which is seasoned by sesame oil, salt, vinegar, minched garlic, chopped greem onions, dried chili peppers and soy souce then could be stir-fried, steamed or marinated or sometimes it is served raw.
Various kinds of namul including kongnamul, sigeumchi namul, miyeok muchim, musaengchae, gosari namul,
chwinamul, bireum namul, naengi namul, dolnamul, gogumasun namul, gaji namul, doraji namul.

I often find 콩나물 kongnamul while eating in Korean restaurant. Kongnamul have appreared since Goryeo era and uniquely it is a seasonal food which is mostly eat at winter until early spring.

Various types of Namul (left up, left bottom, middle bottom side) Photo by Maria Margareta

Jorim is a one of Korean slow cooking. It can be vegetables, meats, seafood or tofu in a mixed sauce (soy sauce) by simmering for a long time. Yeongeun jorim (made from lotus root), jangjorim, godeungeo jorim, dubu jorim are some various kind of jorim that is a part of banchan.

My favorite is gamja jorim and yeongeun jorim. The taste is very sweet and delicious.

Gamja jorim. Gamja means potato. Photo by Maria Margareta

Jeotgal
Is a kind of fermeted seafood, such as fish, anchovies, cuttlefish, pollack, octopus and shellfish. The first record of jeotgal dated in the Silla dynasty and it is very valueable food at that time.

찜 Jjim is a kind of steaming or boiling dishes, usually cooked in a siru or earthenware steamer.
Some kinds of jjim are galbijjim, saengseon jjim, jeonbokjjim, dubujjim, and my most favorite is gyeranjjim.

Gyeranjjim. Made from egg. Photo by Maria Margareta
The main ingredients of 계란찜 gyeranjjim are eggs, green onions, red pepper, salt, pepper etc. Sometimes meat or fish or chicken are put for adding taste.

Korea also has various kind of pancake. 전 Jeon is made with batter, vegetables, mushrooms, meat then fried. Jeon is also easy to make and one of favorite food for Korean people.

The second part of Korean cuisine is 밥 or steamed rice.

The third major part is soup. It could be guk, tang, or jjigae.

찌개 Jjiage is a dish in which is put gochujang, doenjang together with meat, sea food, and vegetables and boiled in a hot pot into a thick stew. Some jjigaes are kimchi jjigae, sundubu jjigae, myeongnanjeot jjigae, gochujang jjigae, and doenjang jjigae.

My favorite jjigae of course 순두부찌개 sundubu jjigae. Sundubu jjigae for my self can boost my energy back, I feel fresh after eating sundubu jjigae. If you feel tired or your body does not fit as ussual, you can try sundubu jjiage to recover your stamina.

So they are some of Korean dishes I always choose either for dinner of lunch, far away from Korea.

Sand Art Animation

What is sand art ?
Sand art, is a term which has two meanings. It is the name given to a style of live performance art and to a type of animation. In the former, an artist creates a series of images using sand, a process which is achieved by applying sand to a surface and then rendering images by drawing lines and figures in the sand with one's hands.
A sand animation performer will often use the aid of an overhead projector or lightbox (similar to one used by photographers to view translucent films). In the latter, animators move around sand on a backlighted or frontlighted piece of glass to create each frame for their animated films.

Sometimes I find sand art animation in Korean music videos and documentary programs. Such as the video below.

or a story about Hangul has been presented very well through sand art animation.

Sand art also appears on the music videos such as ...

Hanok's Furniture

After spending a night in Hanok, Korean traditional houses, I'm interested of some furnitures which are placed in the Hanok. They expressed of aesthetics as well as spiritual and philisophical ideologies also a unique techniques.
Korean furniture is kindly different than another countries. Some differences can be seen of the character, color, ornaments and texture. Then I tried to find some references of Korean furnitures and quitely surprised that most of them are made without nails.

Pict Credit : www.d-addicts.com

Korean traditional furniture can be devided into it's function. As we know, basicaly Hanok has several main functional room such as anbang or inner room, sarangbang using for men's sitting room and kitchen. But it depends of social status of the owner's had. Middle or upper class hanok have separated sarangbang
from the main building it is called sarangchae. According to the Confucianism, literary writings were importance, that's why men needed space for writting and reading or discussing with friends. That's why the furnitures for sarangbang were made to accomodate men's need such as tables, desks, document boxes, or a bookcase to place some books.

Pict Credit : www.jjan.kr

Another part of Hanok is Anbang. Literally means the inner room, it is a private room that had been using for woman that's why it is usually place far away from the gate. People usually using this room for sleeping, or doing woman activities. That's why the Anbang was decorated in woman's style, the furnitures were made to fulfill woman's needs. In the Anbang, it is common to find an equipment with many drawers to keep clothes, also a woman's kit to keep cosmetics which has some drawers and mirror, and a container with padlocks using for keeping important things such as documents, jewelry, daily clothes, or ceremonial stuffs. Wood is a main material for Anbang furniture adding decorations patters from mother of pearl, paper, silk or bamboo.

Each patterns itself also have a meaning :

Tigers represent of power, authority and as a guardian.
Bats represent of blessings and good fortune.
Dragon represent of masculinity.
Tortoise represent of longetivity.
Fish represent of wealth and good fortune.

a Kitchen furniture is including food storage cabinets, tables and shelves for prepared foods and dishes such as 찬장, a double or triple level cupboard, or a container to keep rice or grain.

Korean Drama Time Machine

Interested of genre themes of Korean drama, today, so I would like to write about this topic ^^
Since Winter Sonata, Full House and Boys Before Flowers had been screened on TV and spreading to the world, Korean drama has been improved rapidly, especially in story themes and technology.

Based on my observation, Now there are various kinds of themes and drama genres in Korean Drama comparing with ten years ago, which is melodrama or drama were dominated on the TV screens.
But now, romantic comedy, fantasy, historical drama, horror even thriller themes often showed up in KDrama. Of those various themes in Korean drama in period year 2003 to 2013, I found time-travel themes from the ancient times to the present that has been showed up in the drama. Uniquely all of the dramas were aired on TV in year 2012. Can year 2012 be called as a "time machine" year for KDrama ?

Here are some KDramas that have been listed with the following details :

Rooftop Prince 옥탑방 왕세자

Time-travel theme between Joseon Dynasty to the present.

Aired from March 21 to May 24, 2012 this drama tells about a Joseon crown prince named  Prince Lee Gak finds himself time travelling 300 years into the future and confronts considerable challenges as he adapts to the 21st century. When Crown Prince Lee Gak is transported 300 years into the future to present day Seoul along with his three retainers, they believe that it is their duty to solve the murder case of the Crown Princess in order to return to Joseon. They land in the rooftop apartment of Park Ha, a cheerful woman in her mid-20s, who eventually believes the odd quartet's predicament and becomes their guardian.

Teaser

As Park Ha educates the four on life in the 21st century, Lee Gak comes across Hong Se Na, who seems to be the reincarnation of his wife. Taking on the identity of Yong Tae Yong, Lee Gak slowly begins to unravel the murder of Yong Tae Yong and in turn moves closer to solving the murder case of the Crown Princess.
As he finds himself in love with Park Ha, he figures that maybe the Crown Princess was not so perfect after all.

Queen Inhyun’s Man 인현왕후의

Time-travel theme between Joseon Dynasty to the present.

Drama story :
Kim Boong Do is a scholar who had supported the reinstatement of Queen In Hyun when Jang heebin's schemes resulted in her being deposed and replaced as King Sukjong's queen consort.

With the help of a spell when he is in going to be killed in a fight he travels 300 years into the future of modern Seoul and meets Choi Hee Jin, a no-name actress who is expecting a career renaissance through her role as Queen In Hyun in a TV drama. He begins treating people there, but the lack of necessary implements and rudimentary medical knowledge of the period forces him to seek new ways to aid the sick. Through this challenging process, Jin Hyuk eventually becomes a genuine doctor. Due to the original source, Edo's period was changed to the Joseon Dynasty.
This drama was aired on television in 2012 May 26 to Aug 12.

Faith the great doctor 신의
